Mustering my Kill Team...

Idoneth Deepkin: Kitbash Ideas

Tuesday, April 3, 2018

When I saw the new Idoneth Deepkin, my first thought was "wow, there's a lot of Dark Eldar kitbash potential here." The ID definitely have a Dark Aelf feel to them, among other themes, so I don't think it would take much to transform these underwater aelves into convincing evil space pirates.

Here are my first 4 converted Grotesques, built just in time for a 1500 point Highlander RTT tomorrow!

Drazhar Update

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Life has been extra busy so far this year but has also been extra awesome. Between work, class, and buying a house, I haven't been able to get any gaming in yet, but there has been some progress on a few hobby projects. Drazhar has undergone some minor updates and is almost ready for some liquid green stuff. First, I moved him over to a proper round base, borrowing from the new Farseer blister.

Drazhar Conversion WIP

Monday, November 4, 2013

After a short break away from all things 40k, I'm back with a couple more Dark Eldar projects. I finally started painting my Cronos and on the conversion table is this in progress Drazhar. When I saw the new Shadowblade model I immediately started thinking up candidates for kitbashing. Drazhar won out this time as the pose of Shadowblade just screams "darting strike"(and the old Drazhar model just doesn't cut it next to the new DE).

Farseer on Jetbike

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Here's my Farseer on a Jetbike. It was a fairly simple kitbash using the new plastic Farseer and a Reaver. I had to green stuff the mid-section of the torso to work with the Reaver legs on the bike and also to extend the reach/position of both arms. With the flash on, you can clearly see these areas on the model.

WIP - Plasma Cannon Dreadnought

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

I've had this model for quite some time; one of my very first Space Marine models. This guy has seen several iterations over the years; I've even (unintentionally) bled to get this model to the state you see here today:

Back before I got a Dremel (which was an awesome xmas present!) all I had was a small pack of multi-purpose hand files of various shapes. It must have taken me a good 2-3 hours over a couple of sittings to hack the metal Assault Cannon off the arm it was originally molded to. After awhile, I had a pretty good groove going with the same sawing motion, so I thought I could take my attention off what I was doing just a little and onto the TV. That's when I accidentally drove one of the sharp pointed files into the palm of my hand!

But I really wanted a Plasma Cannon equipped dreadnought and this was before they came out with a plastic version... so it was worth it ;-)

I'm also making a little progress on this Techmarine on Bike. This is another metal model I had to saw in half, in the same manner as the dreadnought, just to fit the top torso to compatible biker legs.

Raven Guard Dreadnought

Monday, January 24, 2011

I finally finished this shooty Raven Guard Dreadnought, equipped with twin-linked lascannon & missile launcher. This one took a little longer, admittedly, because I broke my own rule of not sticking to one unit at a time. I was distracted by some upcoming projects while I was deciding how to do the dreadnought base.

I started prepping the next 3 dreadnoughts and tried to master the art of dotting eyes on the models with exposed faces/skin. I have a couple more techniques to try out but I hope to yield better results in the near future with a little more practice. One of these "flesh" models is an old Space Marine Chaplain on Bike (far left) that I've started to repaint to match the Raven Guard color scheme. I should have some more on this guy posted soon.

Back to the dreadnought, I knew I wanted to incorporate some stones, ruble, maybe a missile or loose ammo casings, etc. on the base to give a more dynamic feel to the model -- this dreadnought was built from the body of the one included in the Assault on Black Reach (AoBR) 40k box set with the lascannon arm coming from a Venerable dreadnought sprue, and the missile launcher arm which was scratch built from spare Land Speeder Typhoon and hunter-killer missile bits.

I wanted to outfit at least one of my dreadnoughts for long-range armour busting & fire support since the other 5 dreadnoughts in my army are equipped for other tactical and strategic scenarios.

Since this dude will probably be hugging cover on the board to avoid being blown up on turn 1, I wanted to highlight the potential nearby foliage / terrain with some green grass on the dread's base. I picked up a canister of Citadel's Scorched Grass at the same time I bought the Dead Grass for the bases with the intent of putting this on my Scouts, snipers, and other models that are more likely to be in cover during the game. This also introduces some more color into the palette and adds variety to bases of the models in the army.

I used some resin material and bits from a basing kit with dead grass on the front portion of the base and green / scorched grass on the back half.

Overall, I'm really happy with how this one turned out. Looking forward to having the rest of the dreadnoughts painted up and on the tabletop soon. You can view more of the most recent dreadnought shots here, and all of the shots taken earlier during the painting process here.

Cheers!

Quick Update & What's On Deck

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

I finished painting the primary colors (black, white, red, bleached bone, boltgun metal, bronze for bullets, flesh for Sgt.) on the 10-man Raven Guard Terminator squad -- still need to finish the bases and go back over for a little fine detail work. I'm also going to add an older Terminator Librarian model to the mix and repaint him while I'm finishing up the other elite comrades. I'll have some new photos posted soon.

On deck, waiting to be painted following the Terminator squad, is this custom shooty ML dreadnought:
This is the AoBR dreadnought with a spare TL Lascannon right arm and a custom built Missile launcher left arm, pieced together from a Typhoon missile launcher and two perpendicularly attached hunter-killer missiles. I chopped off the DccW from the original kit left arm (this one fits snugly without glue and also allows the arm to be rotated and still provide enough tension to position the arm/gun at any angle). I was trying to represent both frag & krak missile options; don't worry Internet, I know only Ironclads can take HK's ;)

I'll get some close-ups posted soon, but for now here's a quick view of what a twist of the arm can do:

Here's side and top views:

This was actually the 6th dreadnought I recently built for a Master of the Forge list. I'll have a painting table feature for each of these mech warriors coming soon, as well as the leader who enables up to 6 dreads and is one of my favorite conversions... the MotF on Bike!
