Ultramarines Movie Review

Saturday, March 5, 2011

So last Sunday I was able to see a special screening of the Ultramarines movie. I don't have a long review or anything, just a few comments on the film. If you're looking for a more in-depth review, this one from The Back 40k is pretty spot on.

Anyway, I will start out by saying it was better than I expected, but I also wasn't expecting much going in. Now I've been a nerd pretty much my whole life, and speaking from experience, you can put nearly any old 'made for DVD', B movie Sci-Fi flick on in the background while wargaming and you're going to have a good time. I've always thought this was due mostly to the wargaming, but I viewed this one without any of that so it had my full attention.

The Good
  • Any scene with a Chainsword
  • Music/Sounds were done well
  • They capture the "spirit" of how a squad of marines would interact, but...

The Bad
  • I wanted to see some epic battle scenes, larger scale fights, some dreadnoughts, army vs. army, you know, something bigger
  • Low budget = lower end graphics
  • Don't tease with a Thunderhawk then have it not be full with some kick ass dudes! Or maybe I'm thinking of the larger BFG ship the Thunderhawk transported them to, but either way, where were all the reserves?

Overall, they did a pretty good job with what they had to work with and despite wanting to see larger scale action, I did enjoy the film on its own. Now add in a little gaming with friends and some beer and you've got yourself a good time ;)
