WIP Necron Warrior & Immortal + SNOW

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Today, I started working on the prototypes for my Necron Warriors and Immortals. I was going for a variation on the Thokt Dynasty paint scheme as I wanted something different from the typical metal & bright neon green look. I also think this theme will go well with the snow bases.

I only wish the "blue" replacement rods for the gauss weapons actually looked a little more blue. As it stands, they mostly look like clear glass but I don't mind that too much. I'd still rather use these clear-blue rods than the green ones -- nothing against that color, I just feel it stands out a little too much and takes away from the rest of the model.

I think I mentioned it before, but I picked these Necrons up from a friend who was getting out of the hobby, so everything was already assembled and most had a dark green primer applied. The models were in bad shape though, missing a bunch of bits. Even if I wanted to use the green gauss rods, only 2 models out of the almost 30 infantry actually came with them. All of the blaster gun ends for the Immortals were missing, so I'll need to take some time and press mold some of those, unless I can use the bits from the new plastic Immortals box (that's probably the better move since it looks like I'd still be able to make a squad of Deathmarks with the remaining bits). I haven't purchased any of the new Necron kits yet and I'd like to repair and paint the models I have before doing so, but it's hard since they have some really cool looking stuff. When I do start to pick up more units I'll definitely be going for a Command Barge, a box or two of Lychguard/Praetorians (not to make either but to convert up a couple Royal Courts), a couple Annihilation Barges (the unit is a steal for the points!) and maybe a few Ghost Arks (they look cool and they make your bread & butter troops a lot more durable with the Repair Barge and the Quantum Shielding).

I'm really looking forward to their second wave release, especially if it contains plastic Wraiths which is easily in the top 3 of my favorite units in the codex. The recent FAQ has reinvigorated my interest in the 'crons and I've begun to do more list building with them. I'd really like to get a playable 1000 pts table-ready in the near future, but we'll see how quickly I can crank stuff out.

In other news, it snowed! Finally! Instead of clearing off the cars (like I should have done) I took the opportunity to snap a few pictures of my recently completed Nightbringer out in the snow.

I'm going to try and get a squad of troops done this weekend so I can get a group shot of them in the snow with their snow bases. But not sure how far I'll get since there's a big game tomorrow. I'm usually not that into it, but you have to support the home team ;) The C'Tan knows, what do you think the purple is for ?

Go Ravens!

Nightbringer C'Tan

I finally managed to finish the Nightbringer. I went back and forth on how to do the skin, trying several different colors and washes before stumbling upon the simple but effective grayscale. I think it helps him stand out a bit more against the deep blue and purple shrouds.

This was also the first model I was able to try some new basing materials with. I've never done a snow/ice/winter theme and was looking forward to trying it out before attempting a similar style on my nice Dragonforge Malifaux bases.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and will definitely keep the theme for the rest of the Necron army. It's nice to be able to switch things up. Now if only I could finalize a basing theme for my Dark Eldar, they'll be good to go. I have a couple of ideas and some more materials to try out. I don't want to make the base too hard to replicate but also want to make sure that it's adding to the overall feel of the model. At first I thought I would base the DE with this snowy tundra theme but it seems a little more fitting for the 'crons, like they are thawing out after a long slumber.

Sorry about the pictures, I'm still trying to figure out the lighting... I really just need to go out and get a decent lamp, or go back to shooting in natural daylight. Trying to situate and position 3 led flashlights is not going to cut it!

Thanks for the FAQ!

Here it is folks, one of the biggest disputes/rules questions (that affects my bike army) has been laid to rest! I'm referring to the ability to Combat Squad when arriving from Reserves by Outflank, Deep Strike, etc. I've always felt that units with both of these rules could in fact do so as they never directly contradicted or imposed restrictions on each other, however given the wording in the older FAQ I can understand how some might be confused. Anyway, with the latest Space Marine FAQ, GW has wisely removed the poorly worded Q & A that caused all this confusion and made it crystal clear what is allowed when utilizing these two special rules:
Q: When a unit of 10 Space Marines with the Combat Squad special rule arrives from reserve as two combat squads, can they move on from, or Deep Strike onto, two different locations? (p51)
A: Yes.
Here's the link to all of the updated FAQ's, which I'm pretty sure all but Tau and Templars got some love: GW FAQs.

The Internet has been up in arms about this whole '6th edition leak' lately and I can't think of a better way GW could have quashed such a buzz than by officially addressing such a large set of rules questions/clarifications for 5th edition. Something I know most of us have been wanting to see for some time. Good job GW! I hope this is a new direction for how the company intends to handle general rules and codex specific questions -- get ALL armies on the same page at the same time (and as quickly as possible!)

2012: Goals for the New Year

Sunday, January 1, 2012

Hope everyone had a good holiday and that the new year is off to a great start for all! My hobby goals for this year stem from the awesome gifts I opened up last week: a Land Raider Crusader to round out my marine army; 2 Talos and a Dark Eldar Battleforce which will effectively double the # of units available for my new army of dark kin; the Seafarers expansion for Settlers of Catan; some excellent hobby tools for my workshop; and then my wife really surprised me with this one :) -- a copy of Games Workshop's latest 'game in a box': Dreadfleet!

Let me start with Dreadfleet. This game is beautiful! A true testament to the high level of detail GW has been able to achieve recently with their plastics. If only everything could be plastic instead of finecast; some of the new resin kits I've purchased have been alright, but others not so much which is even more disappointing when you consider the price premium. Nothing compares to their plastic molds which have minimal clean up and glue together better than anything. But back on topic, Dreadfleet the game is written by none other than Phil Kelly, mastermind behind the latest DE codex. I'm really excited to start working on theses models and to try out some of the missions in this game. I've read through the manual once already and have to say I'm really impressed with the quality and effort put into this game, not just from the models perspective but also the game mechanics. My first goal for 2012 is to assemble and start painting my Dreadfleet.

Next up, my Land Raider Crusader. This will open up a lot of potential for new army lists and will be one of the first kits I work on. I've always wanted one of these and it will make for a fine addition to the biker army -- especially the outflanking version with Khan and some furious charge terminators on board!

Then there's Dark Eldar, the army I've been most drawn to since entering the hobby. I want to take my time with these guys/wyches and make them look good. Some of the best models I've ever seen and a codex with many options to back them up. Really looking forward to this army.

My goal in regards to Settlers of Catan this year is to assemble my own 3D version of a board. Those familiar with this game know that the 10th anniversary, which is incredibly rare and out of print, is the only 3D version of the game. Unless you have $600.00+ the official version isn't really attainable. Therefore, the only remaining option to have a badass board is to build one and as much as I enjoy playing Catan, I know I'll enjoy it even more playing on something that looks like this:

So there you have it, my 2012 goals. I of course hope to play more 40k and enter some more events but we'll see what happens. Definitely looking forward to the local events like Nova & Blob's, and would love to make it to an Adepticon one of these days.

Happy 2012!
